Different Faux Wood Plantation Shutters In Sacramento

March 02, 2020

While there are plenty of faux wood plantation shutters available in Sacramento, they all won’t age the same.  While some faux wood window treatments will last forever without chipping, warping, or fading, other faux wood coverings will begin to degrade in just a few year’s time.

It can be difficult to understand the pros and cons of the different faux wood plantation shutters Sacramento.  But as you learn about the different kinds of faux wood, it will be easy to see which interior shutter will always look great.

The following list looks at the different varieties of faux wood shutters in Sacramento and rates them from the least durable to the most durable and stylish:

Vinyl Shutters:

Some window treatments that use vinyl show themselves as faux wood.  But make no mistake, vinyl is different from faux wood. Vinyl’s plastic look and slick coating is tough to integrate into a your decor, unlike other faux wood or real wood-based shutters.  They may be one of the cheapest plantation shutter products around, but they also are the flimsiest of the non-wood treatments.

Vinyl is also affected by heat. It’s not abnormal to see vinyl plantation shutters melt or discolor due to the sun’s rays. Because of their practice of warping or splitting and their poor insular qualities, vinyl shutters do not provide much energy-efficiency to your home -- especially if the shutter uses hollow shutters.

  • Benefits:

    Cheapest of the non-wood shutters.

  • Drawbacks:

Looks plastic; frail materials; hollow louvers; low energy efficiency; can quickly warp, splinter or fade.

Synthetic Wrapped Product:

A step up from vinyl shutters are wrapped plantation shutters.  These window treatments are constructed from pressed wood, wood chip components, or glued MDF, and then wrapped with a synthetic, vinyl, or plastic coating. The shutters are heavier and can look much more like a normal wood plantation shutter than their less durable alternatives.

Unfortunately, synthetic wrapped shutters have some problems. The pressed grain under the wrapping can be extremely porous, leaving the treatment to be exposed to humidity and moisture. It’s commonplace to find a warped or splintered louver or learn that the synthetic wrapping has split or peeled away.  Also, wrapped shutters won’t be custom-fitted for specialty shaped windows like arches or octagons.

  • Benefits:

Thicker than vinyl shutters; may resemble real wood.

  • Drawbacks:

Not suitable for high humidity or high moisture climates. Will absorb moisture and humidity. Aren't moisture resistant; outer layer can chip away; warps or cracks easily; no custom shapes.

Solid Extruded Faux Wood Shutters:

Plantation shutters made from solid extruded faux wood are more durable than any of the alternative non-wood plantation shutters.  Because the synthetic fibers infuse themselves throughout the product, they form more substantial, solid louvers that are more protected from warping.  You will also find that they are more durable and will act much more like real wood shutters. Solid extruded faux wood shutters are also able to be custom-crafted to fit every window shape and size -- even semi-circles.

But a solid extruded plantation shutter is only as well-made as its synthetic formula.  Some recipes create a fragile product, which can be cracked or chipped during installation. If the mixture doesn’t have a UV inhibitor, then your window treatments will fade and yellow from the sun. Some manufacturers need to paint their products, which also brings about chipping and yellowing over time.

  • Benefits:

More substantial product that is most comparable to a hardwood plantation shutter.

  • Drawbacks:

Quality depends on the formulation of the faux wood composite.
