Which Window Treatments Offer the Most Privacy?

April 30, 2018

Your house is your castle, and if you’re like the majority of homeowners, getting Sacramento window treatments that offer privacy and noise blocking to maintain your sanctuary is important to you. Any window covering is more effective than a naked window. However there are some window treatments that give you more privacy than others, even on hard to cover windows.

Improving Privacy on Specialty Windows

Most large, standard windows in your house are simple to cover with nearly any window treatment like Sacramento shutters, shades, or blinds.

You might encounter some situations when you need a particular style of window treatment to provide adequate privacy and light control. These could be:

  • Windows in the bathroom where excess moisture may ruin fabric window treatments.

  • Entryway sidelights that are long and thin on which window treatments can be pushed around by the door’s movement.

  • Non-square windows such as eyebrows, circular windows, bow windows, etc., where conventional rectangular blinds and drapes can’t cover your window without hiding the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that can be difficult to reach such as second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you’ll want window treatments that go above and beyond to provide privacy to your house.

As a plus, shop around for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Top Window Coverings for Privacy

The best window treatments for privacy that we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to fully close, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is your goal. To let light in and see outside, just tilt the louvers. For high windows, you can always keep the louvers tilted at an angle to let light in while still keeping your privacy.

Indoor shutters are also great for specialty-shaped windows because they can be customized to fit any shape or size. And since Polywood shutters are moisture resistant, they’re a natural fit for bathrooms.

Another window treatment that helps with privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space at the top of the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent any views from outside your home. Though they can’t be custom-fit to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes in water resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Window Treatments that Don’t Help With Privacy

While any window treatment gives you at least some privacy, there are two that perform poorer than others. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add a an airy feeling to a room. Yet they don’t offer the level of privacy of other window treatments, especially when it’s dark out.

Another product we don’t recommend for privacy are cheap or bulky blinds, which can snap and/or get stuck at a certain angle. If you can’t completely shut the blinds because of breakage, then they’re not providing much privacy at all.
